Why Is Polygamy Permissible in Islam?

Polygamous marriage in Islam is one of the hot topics in several studies. In this article, an attempt was made to address the disagreements over the issue of polygamy in Islam under a form of mixed research method; i.e., positivist and interpretive. In this regard, some studies were carried out by researchers that have prompted criticism for this practice. In this work, based on a mixed study on scientific evidence, we studied this subject with reference to such fields as sustainable development and human ecology. By studying this subject through a mixed method, other marriage- and polygamy-related issues in Islam were analyzed, as well. In the end, it was deduced that polygamous marriage in Islam and even in other religions such as Judaism and Christianity is something aiming at raising population in accordance with sustainable development, security, and improvement of human ecology. This practice is today considered as necessary for restoring and creating culture and increasing the security of the human ecology of the Shiite-Islam communities.
