Effect of ethanol and MTBE on desulfurization of transportation fuels with Ni(II )X zeolite at ambient temperature

Deep desulfurization of fuels is being mandated and is also needed for future full cell applications. Ethanol and MTBE as an additive to fuels strongly effects on desulfurization by adsorption with zeolite. In the present study, adsorptive desulfurization of a cut of oil, containing nearly 500 ppmw thiophene in n- Decane (40%), n-Hexadecane (40%) and benzene (20%) were studied quantitatively and effect of liquid hourly space velocityconsidered. Ni( II )X was used as the sorbent and experimental dates showed that the relative strengths of bonding follow the order: ethanol > MTBE > thiophene. The inhibiting effects were measured by the decreases in the model fuel. In addition, the desulfurization capacity was strongly dependent on the liquid hourly velocity because of the diffusion limitation of thiophene in the zeolite.
