Background and ObjectivesIncreasing trend of substance use has been noticed in Iran, especially among youths andincluding the married ones. As a result in married cases, the continuity of life together may bethreatened by drug using by one or both of partners. Therefore, this study was conducted todetermine the trend of tobacco and substance using among new married couples.Subjects and MethodsIn this cross sectional study and through a convenient sampling, 105 new married couplesthat less than 5 years was passed from their marriage and applied for divorce and werereferred to the counseling centers by Family court were interviewed by filling a validquestionnaire for each of them.FindingsOut of 105 participants, 78(74.3%) were women and 27(25.7%) were men. Mean of age ofmen was 31.2±5.6 and for women was 26.7±6 years. Mean time passed from marriage was4±1.5 and 3.6±1.6 years for men and women respectively. 25% and 33% of men and womenhad bachelor degree respectively. One third were self- employed and 65.7% had a familialrelationship with their spouses. According to interviewees self -reporting, prevalence oftobacco smoking and substance abuse was 7.6% and 10.5% in pre-marriage stage while thesefigures had been increased to 15.2% and 18.1% in post marriage period respectively. ConclusionsIn young married couples, prevalence of tobacco smoking and substance abuse shows anabsolute increase 7.6% in post marriage compared to pre marriage stage. In other wordstobacco smoking and substance abuse shows an increasing ratio 200% and 72% in the sameperiod. These issues should be addressed more in pre-marriage education and post marriagecounseling programs.
