Cultural differences within aspects of communication: with a translational perspective

Communication is a behavior affected by culture, what one is taught affects the values one maintains and how one behaves. Although culture is often used to explain behavior, we have little understanding of why some culture traits have impacts on behavior despite of others. Different cultures affect the way people communicate, whether verbal or nonverbal and the way media works. Through these communications, translation had played and is still playing an important role. There are no communication styles that are free from the restrictions imposed by particular cultural traits. The relative language and culture of a society shapes or reshapes not only the social, political perceptions but also an entire lifestyle.This paper mainly aims to review and summarize articles discussing the influence of cultural diversity on distinctive aspects of communication including media, social relationships, nonverbal interactions as silence, gestures, body language and eye contact, organizational behavior and other valuable features. Moreover, Vygotski’s (1934) socio-cultural theory is applied in this research. Analyses of related literature showed that a culture greatly affects the way individuals behave and communicate. Another finding demonstrates that employees working in multicultural workplaces tend to develop their intercultural interactions through intercultural or cross-cultural communications. Other findings of the research will be discussed in subsequent pages. Hence, the concise analysis of cultural diversity across the world will give us better understanding of the interdependent relationship of these two influential phenomena.
