چکیده مقاله:

Ornamental fish coloration is of importance in terms of marketability. In order tomake the natural colors of captive ornamental fish emerge, the required pigments ofthese fish should be artificially provided through the diet. Due to the high price ofsynthetic pigments, the herbal pigments have widely been employed as a source ofpigments. At the present study, the effect of pigments found in the extracts of redbeet root (Beta vulgaris sp.), containing natural Betaxanthins and Betacyanins, wereinvestigated on the coloration of Royal oscar skin (Astronotus ocellatus spp.). In thisrespect, a stock of oscar fish (sixty days old) with approximate weight of 4 ± 1 g wereused. Experiential fish were divided into 4 groups of 10 individuals, each with threereplications per treatment. The fish was fed a commercial diet supplemented withcooked red beet root extract at four levels 0, 50, 100 and 200R RmL kg-1 food for eightweeks. The results indicated that the group fed with 200mL kg-1 of beet root extractexhibited more intense coloration than the others. No coloration was observed in thecontrol group. The results showed that red beet root can be used as an appropriatesource of natural pigment for improving the marketability of captive Royal Oscar fish.
