چکیده

This research examines the chemical compounds, antibacterial activity, and antioxidant activity of Celery (Apium graveolens) and Barberis (Berberis vulgaris) that is native to Iran. After deriving the hydro alcoholic extracts of the plants by maceration method, their chemical compounds were identified by GC/MS method. The antimicrobial effects of A. graveolens and B. vulgaris extracts were examined on eight standard strains by disc diffusion in agar, determination of MIC and MBC. Also, the antioxidant properties of the plants were assessed by the DPPH method. The results of the GC/MS showed that 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2- furaldehyde and 1, 5-di deuteriooctane are the most abundant compounds in the extracts of B. vulgaris and A. graveolens accounting for 55.32 and 11.23 percent of their extracts, respectively. It was found that the studied extracts had remarkable antimicrobial impacts on the assayed microorganisms. The highest diameter ofinhibition zone at the concentration of 90 mg/mL was related to Staphylococcus aureus (26.33±2.30) and Staphylococcus aureus(25.33±1.52) for the extracts of A. graveolens and B. vulgaris, respectively. The results of MIC and MBC indicated that the lowestMIC was related to Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa at the concentration of 18.75 mg/mL in the extract of B. vulgaris and toEscherichia coli and Staphylococcus epidermidis at the concentration of 18.75 mg/mL in the extract of A. graveolens. Also, antioxidanttest revealed that both plants are important in terms of antioxidant properties. IC50 was found to be 0.44 mg/mL for A. graveolens and2.62 mg/mL for B. vulgaris. The results showed that the studied plants can be a good alternative for synthetic medications to treatdiseases caused by oxidative stresses and infections
